Just a little catching up…
We’ve been a bit busy around here lately, but it has been
fun!

These chicks (pullets) arrived the end of February: 15 Buff Orpingtions,
15 Ameraucana, and 6 Black Sexlink. Aren’t they sooo cute! The
Postman called first thing in the morning telling us to come pick
them up at the post-office in town, I could here them chirping
over the phone! These chicks will replace our chickens
that were ALL (26 total), murdered one night by a huge gang of raccoons!!!
Raccoons are very mean and will kill a chicken just to do it! They did not
eat a one of them, they just murdered them.

Yeah, they look cute, but raccoons can get very vicious.
We have reinforced the coop (again), and hopefully they will not get
in this time.
The chicks are much bigger now, I’ll post new pics soon.
Here is a raccoon joke for you:
Question: Why did the chicken cross the road?
Answer: To show the raccoons it could be done!!
(This joke might only be funny to people who live in this
area, there are always dead raccoons who have been hit by
cars lying in the road.)

Isn’t she sweet! She is a Hampshire, and we are really
enjoying having them here.

The sheep (lambs) getting used to their new surroundings.

Ben giving the sheep some grain.

Stephanie’s February birthday and Caitlin’s May birthday.

Gianna and Jake.

The boys roasting hot dogs for lunch!

Do any other mothers have a heart attack when their sons
do things like this or is it just me????

Yes I have a heart attack when my boys do that…Especially off the deck of your house!!!
The lambs look cute. The chicks used to look cute. Lol. They’ll be pretty when they’re all grown up.
Love ya. =)
@Elizabethmarie_1 - Ha,ha! Yes, your boys give me a heart attack too! Hey, have patience with the chicks, they are in their “gawky” stage, they will be beautiful once they get the rest of their feathers
. Love ya too!
Haha..ok.
The boys wanted to know if you guys want to play tennis tomorrow…they asked when they went to bed.
You can think about it, I’ll call you in the morning. I’m super tired and going to sleep!
Goodnight, love ya, pleasant dreams, see you in the morning (Well, talk to you) sleep good.
Those chicks are adorable! I am so sorry about your chickens. Yes I have heard about racoons and how mean they are. The sheep are adorable too!
Absolutely that would drive me & hubby both crazy if our child had done that…lol…I remember as kids my brother had this huge inner tube & he would ride his bike up a ramp and flip while on the bike on top of this inner tube. Goodness the things boys do lol.
ryc: I too drink a lot of water and yes that does help the swelling. I especially drink it during the night.
I always love looking at your photo posts
.
we’ve raised Sexlinks. They are a good hardy chicken. I would give anything to have chickens again. We now have a German Short Hair ( bird-dog) that is my sons. So, I cant have anything bird related now!!
The only complaint I would have abut Sex Links is they are not sitters. We either had to incubate them or put them under some Silkies who want to do nothing but sit!!
Around here, the joke is on the Possom! lol
@Mymanyblessings - Flipping on the bike would scare me too! And you are right, the things boys do!
Thank-you so much for your sweet comment.
@victoriantomboy - Well, seeing we have no rooster, we won’t have to worry about the sexlinks sitting
. We always have a rooster, but this time we ordered all pullets. I might regret this though, I love to hear the rooster crow. Sounds like you have experience with chickens, sorry you have to wait to get them again!
@AbidingontheVine - yep, quite a bit of experience. Was thinking back to when my son first starting loosing them to critters from the woods. Coons, possoms, etc. He would just cry his heart out. Each of his chickens had names! You get older and used to those things.
You know, you would think a chicken is a chicken is a chicken! lol But there is quite a difference between them. Some are good layers, some aint. But they are good just to have for free range and keep your yard from from bugs. Some are loving, Some are mean. But you would think too, they would all be good sitters. They aint! Weird! It would seem instinctive. My dad had one that hated one of my boys. Nobody else but that one child!!
But the best sitters are Silkies. You just have to watch them cause they are hard to keep if they get wet cause of how their feathers are. They’re like big cotton balls!
I can imagine the raccoon getting 1 or 2 chickens but ALL…wow! Awhile back we got one chicken just to try it out and in the morning even with the dog barking, the creature pulled the chickens head outside of the small cage wire killed it and left. That’s when we realized maybe with the animals we have out here, we’re not cut out to be chicken owners.
Cute lambs!
Dearest Karen, Thanks ever so much for the update. One of these days I will post again. Yes, definitely, a heart attact waiting to happen. Oh these poor old nerves of mine. Great action picture you took, I think photography runs in your family or Caitlin has taught you all well. Lovely talking with you this week. I will call you soon.
Blessings and Hugs, Cindy
@redladybug18 - Awww…I think you should try again. Chickens are really fun and easy (when they are alive lol).
